A new hyper-mutated variant BA.2.86 has been detected in Israel, Denmark the UK, the USA, South Africa and Canada. It has also been detected in wastewater in Switzerland and Thailand. The first Canadian case was reported in an individual in British Columbia who had not travelled outside the province, health officials said on Tuesday, August 29.
“It’s safe say that BA.2.86’s presence is widespread across the world at this point,” said cardiologist and author Eric Topol in his blog Ground Truths.
