The original Omicron variant is no longer circulating; instead, various Omicron sub-lineages and recombinant variants are the primary strains circulating globally.

  • As of mid-2025, variants like NB.1.8.1 (nicknamed “Nimbus”) and XFG (nicknamed “Stratus”) are seeing increased circulation and are being closely monitored by organizations like the WHO.
  • Increased Transmissibility: Many of these newer Omicron descendants, like NB.1.8.1 and XFG, demonstrate high transmissibility and are rapidly spreading.

Severity Remains Generally Lower (but with caveats): While these newer Omicron variants are highly transmissible, current evidence suggests they are not associated with more severe disease compared to other circulating Omicron lineages. However, a large volume of cases can still lead to increased hospitalizations and deaths, particularly in vulnerable populations.
